Is it to do with april fools?Why did youtube change the layout?They'll tell you they did it to make it more convenient for the user but the reality is they did it for more money. As you know, popular videos, both good and bad, receive ads on their video screen, the more people who see these videos the more money youtube gets. The most notorious change they made is removing the star rating system, which has angered alot of users. The star rating system gave users a good idea how generally liked and disliked a video is. With the star rating system removed there is no way to tell how good a video is and so they all appear the same making it more likely users will click on videos with a lot of views. I know this for certain as my most popular video, before the change was getting about 20-30 views a day, and now I've received almost 700 views since the change.
